Pacemaker/coumadin

Post a new topicby Thebone on Fri Feb 27, 2009 12:47 pm

My 70 year old father just had a pacemaker installed as his a-fib is getting worse. He is on coumadin. Will the fact that he has a pacemaker now negate the need for the coumadin?

Boy, this is a old post, but I'll offer this in case "you" are still watching.

I don't know the relationship between a pacemaker and AFib, that is I do not believe a pacemaker is normally used to cure AFib. However, if the AV node (I believe it is) is disabled and the heart us crun full time by a pacemaker, that would fix the ventricle rate (to pacemaker rate) but the atrial is still on its own, I believe, and that's where the clot problem originates with AFib (i.e., still exists), so an anticoagulant is normally prescribed (In my experience)

I am not a doctor, just an AFib patient.
