cardiac tamponade

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Aug 05, 2002 6:36 am

My husband contracted a staph infection of the bloodstream after a stent procedure. As a result he had endocarditis, massive vegetation in his aeorta, kidney failure, double pnuemonia, and inflammation of the liver. The last time he was in the hospital, the cardiologist said he had a leaking mitral valve but figured it was caused by high blood pressure as a result of the kidney failure. Now his kidneys are back to full function and we thought he was on his way to a full recovery. However, the past few days he has experienced pain in his collarbone area and said it feels as though its moved to his neck. He also has a low grade fever and extreme weakness. A ct scan at our local hospital showed his heart was enlarged however when the local doctor talked with his out of town cardiologist, the cardiologist convinced him the heart was probably not enlarged but there was likely fluid around it. During my husbands first hospital stay, doctors drained a half liter of fluid off his heart. It was not infected. Doctors keep putting him off about the pain he is experiencing in the collarbone area and neck. He has been sick now for two solid months. I am very concerned and frustrated that none of the doctors we are working with seem that concerned about this pain and weakness. I turned to the internet for possible answers and found an article on cardiac tamponade. Could this be what is wrong with him? Should we try to find another doctor who will take this seriously or am I over-reacting?
