costochondritis?

Post a new topicby colonnac on Wed Feb 13, 2008 4:23 pm

I am a 45 year old female who has been experiencing chests pains over the past 10 years. Initially, I went to the emergency room knowing I was having a heart attack The ER doctors did EKG x rays, everything. Since I exercise and weight was okay- 125 pounds at 5"6, he didn't know what it was. He
said it may be costochondritis? It occurs maybe 4-5 times per year only but so frightening. I have rushed to the doctor since but mainly just wait it out now. Ironically, it often happens in the middle of the night or at times when I am low on sleep (often). It is paralyzing and I am unable to move/ barely talk. It can happen on the left or right side of my chest but never both. It can last from 5 minutes to 25. The 1st time it ever happened it went on all night.
Has anyone experienced anything similiar/ diagnosis? I am afraid to be too dismissive.

Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that attaches the ribs to the sternum. An episode of this is nothing that is transient. It sticks around for several weeks and requires a certain treatment to heal. So what you describe does not sound like costochondritis to me. It would not come on and go away in a matter of 10 to 25 minutes. Research it on the internet for yourself.
